CMN 121 Midterm: CMN121-M2 study guide
Document Summary
Adjacency pairs where 2 people both speak, each taking a turn. Ex: 1 person says utterance, then responder says utterance. It is a sequence of 2 communicative actions. The 2 actions often occur adjacent to each other. One action is a first pair part & the other is a second pair part, that is, they are sequentialy ordered. They are categorized or type - connected so that any given first pair part must be matched with 1 of a relatively few types of second pair parts. One of the most powerful concepts we have for understanding conversation is the idea of the adjacency pair (nofsinge 51) Adjacency pairs work the way they do because participants orient toward making them work, much as if trying to obey a regulative rule governing adjacency pairs - pg 53. Conversations occur when there"s at least 1 adjacency pair. Ex: walking by someone & just quickly say hello.
