Dalton"s theory: elements are made of indestructible atoms, not indestructible when it comes to nuclear reactions, only chemical reactions, atoms of a given element are alike. They differ between elements: this was correct at the time that the theory was introduced, atoms unite in whole number ratios to form compounds. When two elements combine to form more than one compound, the weights of one element that combine with a fixed weight of the other, are in a ratio of small whole numbers. Ex: 1. 0g hydrogen + 8. 0g oxygen = water. 1. 0g hydrogen + 16. 0g oxygen = hydrogen peroxide.
