Chemical messengers communicate a signal from one cell to another. 1st step in the action of any intercellular chemical messenger is the binding of the messenger to specific target cell proteins (receptors) The binding initiates a sequence of events in the cell, leading to the cell"s response to that messenger (signal transduction) o. Understand the concepts of specificity, saturation, affinity, competition. Give examples of drugs that are agonists (morphine) and antagonists (naloxone: agonist example: *new chemical messenger that acts as old one & elicits same response. What is expected to bind to protein receptor. Acts as stimulant: antagonist example: *artificial chemical messenger that does not elicit same response. Not expected to bind there, doesn"t really cause anything but blocking binding site.
