Document Summary

Cognition- processes by which the sensory information is received, processed, stored. We receive information from the outside world through our senses. Cognitive psychology- the study of mental processes; how we think, remember, decide, perceive, etc. Cognitive processing transforms information through reduction, elaboration, and pattern recognition. We reduce information because we can"t respond to every stimulus at once. We elaborate information by filling in the blanks when there is missing information (we do not remember things exactly the way it happened) We recognize patterns because we are programmed to simplify what we see. Trepanning- drilling a hole into a person"s skull as a means of letting evil spirits out and good spirits in (started in 6,000 bc) Phrenology- theory that the different parts of the skull were associated with different mental activities and personality traits. Late 1800s- discovery of the neuron (led to the birth of cognitive neuroscience)
