Document Summary

Network theory: node-link system, network of interconnections. Semantic memory is organized in a hierarchical netlike structure: similar to neuroanatomy. Structure is the same (neurons in the brain are all interconnected and stored by association: meaning is determined by related concepts. Ex: concepts related to robin= bird, animal etc: nodes. Things in memory, specific location in memory: links. Everything is connected to everything else: work well for explaining how factual knowledge is stored and accessed, spreading activation. Semantic distance effect: number of nodes between concepts predicts the time it takes to respond. Vs is a canary a bird?: compared to original network model which assumes that there is equal distance between nodes. Typicality effect: when typical members of a category are more closely associated with the category than non-typical members, ex: robin or a sparrow vs penguin or ostrich, typical examples are judged more quickly.
