It refers to the dynamics of behavior the way our behaviors are initiated, sustained, directed and terminated. Activation: involves the decision to initiate a behavior. Persistence: is the continued effort toward a goal even though obstacles may exist (investment of money, time, etc. ) Intensity: can be seen in the concentration and vigor that goes into pursuing a goal. Biological motives: are based on biological needs that must be met for survival. Learned motives: based on learned needs, drives, and goals (typically social in nature). Related to learned needs for approval, status, achievement, power, and affiliation. Learned motives are based on the pull of external stimuli. The pull of a goal is called its incentive value (the goal"s appeal beyond its ability to fill a biological need) Stimulus motives: express our needs for stimulation and information. Examples include activity, curiosity, exploration, manipulation and physical contact.
