The muckrakers led the early 20th-century movement, and were journalists and writers that exposed the horrible conditions of work to millions of americans through articles, pamphlets, and books, as america became a leader in industrial production. Workers were subject to monotonous tasks, exposed to toxins, metallic, and organic dusts, and were using dangerous machinery. The muckrakers aim was to force congress to make reforms and force dangerous industries to clean up their workplace through propaganda. Reformers within the capitalist ideological framework used words such as costs, efficiency, resources, and breakdowns to describe accidents and disease. Injured workers were compared to broken down machines, and workers killed on the job were seen as wasted resources. They saw human conservation purely in terms of long term financial benefits of company stockholders. Women needed to leave their loved ones to work in the factory, when their place was at home.
