Dominant social groups have attempted to utilize physical culture in their efforts to discipline and control bodies. Sport and physical activity have been used to teach moral values, proper behavior, self- control, and respect for authority. What bodies can use which spaces: gender segregation, whites vs blacks, elite- class segregation amateurs were allowed, little league baseball- men were coaches, men played the games, women in the stance. Positivism takes facts or causes of certain phenomena, a truth that can be objectively obtained through the rigorous testing of hypothesis. Those coming from an anti-positivism consider knowledge to be fundamentally subjective and reality ro be socially constructed/ rather than seeking truth, interpretive paradigms seek to develop an understanding of the social world. Truth- subjective: white men cant jump. Although race, sex, and sexuality all have biologically bases, understandings of race and gender are social constructed.
