Someone or something that is exciting and in the news. Subject with public interest that is shared with some portion of the public. Gives a glance at aspects of the world around them. Infotainment masquerading as news (cid:907)if it bleeds, it leads(cid:908) Fear based news that draw attention and are out of the ordinary. If there is blood, violence it will get attention. Dramatic or entertaining images that dominates reporting. Four models of communication: transmission model: the flow of messages, ritual model: shared experience, publicity model: attention vs. content, reception model: variable meanings. Primarily used for printing religious subjects rather than news. Adoption of new tech -> not automatic. Audience -> news must be current and trustworthy. Evolution of skills -> lively writing has value. Publishers & authorities -> friction vs. accommodation.
