Listening and communicating, like reading and writing, are learned skills. You spend more time listening than you do reading and writing combined. Listening is considered to be a passive process. A good listener has to be patient, suspend judgment, and analyze what is said. Hearing: biological activity that involves reception of a message through sensory channels. Listening: process that involves reception, attention, perception, the assignment of meaning, and the listener"s response to the message. The initial step in the listening process is the reception of a stimulus or message. Americans between 20 and 69 years have sustained permanent damage to hearing. (due to loud music and loud noise in work) If you fail to look at a person while he or she speaks, you miss much information. (facial expression, posture, movement, appearance) Once the word or visual symbol is received, it reaches the attention stage.
