Feminist; wrote an important letter to john adams about not forgetting the women: alien & sedition acts, 1798. Alien: adams changed naturalization laws; making new immigrants support jefferson; president had power to deport trouble making aliens. Sedition: rising power of newspapers; triggered dem-rep political clubs: anti-federalist, articles of confederation, 1781-88. Created one national assembly where each state had one vote. French expected to send 13 separate ambassadors to u. s. Mainly a defense pact; 13 separate govts: barbary wars, battle of bunker hill, june 1775. Attempt by the british to take over the hill overlooking boston and they won but with high loses. 1st battle: bill of rights, 1791 (ratified) No excessive bail or cruel and unusual punishment - Enumeration of rights does not deny existence of other rights. Power not given to national govt it given to the state govt: boston massacre, march 5 1770.
