Document Summary

Name the muscles of respiration and describe their roles in breathing. External intercostal- will elevate ribs 2-12 and widen the thoracic cavity. Diaphragm: descends and increases depot of thoracic cavity. Internal intercostals & interosseous part- depress ribs 1-11 and narrow thoracic cavity: Diaphragm- ascends and reduces depth of thoracic cavity. Rectus abdominals- depresses lower ribs, pushes diaphragm upward by compressing abdominal organs. External abdominal oblique- depresses lower ribs, pushes diaphragm upward by compressing abdominal organs. Describe the brainstem center that control breathing and the inputs they receive from other levels of the nervous system. The 3 pairs of respiratory centers are in the medulla oblongata and pons. Ventral respiratory group (vrg): primary generator of the respiratory rhythm. Has two webs of neurons inspiratory i neurons and e neurons for expiration. Spinal cord output goes to diaphragm and external intercostals. Contraction of these muscles enlarges the thoracic cage & diaphragm causing inspiration.
