Document Summary

Immune system - 3 lines of defense against environment agents: First line of defense - epithelial barriers that are impenetrable to daily pathogens. Second line - protections against pathogens; exs leukocytes, macrophages, antibacterial proteins, nk cells, fever, & inflammation. Third line - adaptive immunity aka destroy pathogen & leave memory of it so it can be quickly defeated in future encounters. Defenses we are born with; include 1st & 2nd line of defense. 3 characteristics: local effects: pathogen killed at site on invasion (except for fever its systemic/all over, nonspecific: each mechanism acts against broad spectrum of diseases, lacks memory: no easier to defeat pathogen in another time. Adapts body to presence of pathogen so we become less vulnerable to illness. Skin too dry & poor in nutrients for microbial growth (except pubes/pits) Has keratin that few pathogens can penetrate. Sweat & sebum coat skin w/protective acid mantle stop bacterial growth.
