Pols exam 1: american politics, country faces a number of challenges. Frustration with politicians: partisan bickering, political scandals. Raise taxes or cut spending: politics who gets what, when and how. About resolving conflict in a peaceful way: war is not resolving conflict in a non-peaceful way. Consists of negotiation, bargaining and compromise we can"t have 2 policies simultaneously: exists when people have to make collective decisions (ex. Illegal immigration policy, obamacare, what to spend $ on, who gets to be president: people think bad things about the government, media reports bad news, we have high expectations about government. Federalism federal laws and state laws: good things that the government does. Isn"t always bad, just arises from different backgrounds and opinions. Sometimes easy to resolve, but other times is more complex: complex conflict requires an elaborate set of institutions to resolve, political institutions rules by which conflict is resolved. Examples: electoral college, congress, presidency, bureaucracy, judicial system.
