Document Summary

During the industrial revolution, people moved from rural to inner cities to work in factories (people follow where the jobs/ money are). After wwii, the gi bill made it easier for vets to live in and own houses to carry out the american dream through affordable mortgage rates. There were also better schools and less crime. Blacks had to stay behind in inner cities, which were left with poorer populations, a greatly reduced tax base, few jobs, and a low level of services. Also, the cities pursued a policy of disinvestment and redlining. Explain: metropolitan deconcentration, disinvestment and redlining, globalization and deindustrialization. Metropolitan deconcentration: metropolitan areas are sprawling over larger geographic spaces to urban fringe areas. The businesses that are moving to suburbs provide: the best paying jobs with the best paying benefits, and regional-serving jobs that pay less but still hold good employment opportunities.
