Prenatal development: germinal stage- when the union of sperm and egg happens. Encompasses the first two weeks after conception: embryonic stage- mass of cells. Lasts from 2 weeks until the end of the second month: fetal stage- fetus. Motor development- refers to the progression of muscular coordination required for physical activities. Attachment- refers to the close emotional bonds of affection that develop between infants and their caregivers. Separation anxiety- emotional distress seen in many infants when they are separated from people with whom they have formed an attachment. Theories of attachment: evolutionary theory of attachment (john bowlby) - there is an inherent need for closeness to give us comfort. Proximity=survival: behaviorist theory of attachment- mothers are associated with the reinforcing event of being fed, social/emotional theory of attachment (harry harlow"s research) - scared monkey and saw which mother the monkey would go to.
