Overview: occurs on average between ages 12-13 for american girls, beginning to occur a bit earlier (a few months); may be due to increased exposure to hormones in foods and estrogenic disrupters (chemicals that disrupt levels of estrogen); Definition of pms: no consensus on how to define it, very little scientifically sound evidence that links period to symptoms, particularly psychological symptoms, but also biological, some women experience very painful menstruation which appears to be biologically based. Methodological problems of pms research: prospective questions. Conclusions and directions for research: attitudes and expectations about menstruation and being a woman, women are likely to attribute the symptoms they experience to their menstrual cycle if it"s (cid:272)o(cid:374)siste(cid:374)t (cid:449)ith their a(cid:374)d other"s e(cid:454)pe(cid:272)tatio(cid:374)s, self-fulfilling prophecies. Illegal abortions have a high rate of morbidity and mortality. In the us, safe and legal abortion is available but restricted, especially for adolescents: some states involve parental involvement or parental consent.
