What is Biopsychology?
- The study of how biological processes influence behavior, emotion, and thoughts.
- Synonymous with physiological psychology, behavioral neuroscience.
Many different sub-disciplines
1. Psychopharmacology how drugs affect the brain and behavior
a. A lot of this research is done in non-human animals
b. Study on the effect that a particular drug has on anxiety.
2. Neuropsychology uses a battery of tests to study how the brain affects behavior,
typically in ill and brain damaged people.
a. Work that’s pretty uh oly doe o huas
3. Psychophysiology Uses physiological measures to study psychological processes in
humans
Course Introduction: How do we study it experimentally?
1) Measure brain activity.
a. Can use fMRI to measure blood activity in the brain to infer which brain parts are
activated.
b. We can also study singular neurons by putting electrodes down into the brain
and studying it while the rodent performs a behavior
i. Group of neurons or a singular neuron
c. Looking at the expression of a certain gene or protein, after an animal learns
something.
2) Manipulate brain activity.
I. Neural Communication
II. Coding Senses

Document Summary

The study of how biological processes influence behavior, emotion, and thoughts. Stress and emotion: neural communication, course organization, introduction, neurons and neuroanatomy, neuron structure, membrane potential and impulse, action potential, synaptic transmission. Be able to discern different types of neurons both by their function and by their shape. Humans tend to have the biggest brain size to body size ratio. Lots of cortical area: pro(cid:271)a(cid:271)ly why we are su(cid:272)h (cid:862)i(cid:374)tellige(cid:374)t(cid:863) (cid:271)ei(cid:374)gs, divisions of the nervous system, central nervous system (cns) brain spinal cord, peripheral nervous system (pns) peripheral nerves, somatic nervous system and autonomous nervous system. *question about afferent vs efferent on the exam. Two main modes of communication in the brain: Neuron structure, membrane potential and impulse: basic structure of neurons. Dendrites: dendrites are connected to the cell body. Cell body has the nucleus of the cell and the dna. Cell body soma contains the nucleus; contains other organelles.
