Population size: large populations are always more difficult to organize than smaller ones due to a decrease in face-to-face contact, which weakens solidarity. Differentiation: differentiation always creates problems for social control. Inequality: as populations grow and people do different things, it is inevitable that some people get more money, power, and prestige than others, which gives rise to conflicts and tension. Without government to exert social control society would be in trouble. Explain the relationship between population size, differentiation, & inequality. Populations -> differentiation -> inequality, yes because there are more and more different people. External: coercive and repressive, imposed from the outside whether we like it or not! Formal: consists of large bureaucracies with people in offices who are authorized to exert control. Compare thomas hobbes" idea of leviathan (government) vs. adam smith"s invisible. Hand of the market (supply and demand) in light of our need for macro-level control. Thomas hobbes idea is: social control through oppressive government.
