1. Examine homicides in your local jurisdiction for the last year. Try to determine which
homicides you might classify as confrontational if you were a researcher. List and discuss
the factors that led you to classify the homicides in this way.
Confrontational homicides are typically ones that tend to happen where stimulants
are present such as alcohol and drugs as well as cases of road rage. Instances where
individuals can get heated in a confrontation which may lead to an altercation has the
possibility of ending in a confrontational homicide. Typically places where individuals
may run into other individuals who are experiencing similar stimulants. This can include
things like bars, restaurants, and clubs.
In Columbia last year there was 11 homicides listed and almost half of them
remain uncleared. One of the cases that stood out to me was of Torance Peoples and
Trevonne Judge in which the two men were found shot outside of a nightclub in the early
hours. This case represents a clear example of confrontational homicide. Having occurred
in a nightclub parking lot in that late hours of night stand out as a place where
confrontation is likely. The report goes on to say that there was discussion over strippers
and money which may have prompted the shootout. While both the victims and assailants
in this case may have just planned for a night out it quickly turned deadly. With the
information known it leads me to believe that this incident wasn’t premeditated but
escalated throughout the evening and lead to violence after the two parties could not
reach a conclusion.

2. Discuss why confrontational homicide has higher rate compared to other types of
homicide.
Confrontational homicides occur at higher rates because most violent acts
especially murder aren’t planned out. Most people don’t plan to murder someone, but
things escalate and turn into a situation where the violence occurs. We have all been in
situations of road rage or frustration where we may have taken actions that we may
regret. Some individuals find themselves in the same situation but their actions are highly
violent and lead to homicide. Once a fight begins it is hard to deescalate. Lot of time with
confrontational homicide this idea of forward panic arises. While individuals may initiate
an altercation they quickly feel that they need to be more aggressive in their nature in fear
for their own life. This happens when maybe a disagreement occurs and individuals fear
that the other party is going to take up violent action if a conclusion is not reached. So
therefore, before letting the other party have the opportunity the individual takes a violent
action that may be deemed unnecessary, but was acted out of based on far. A lot of
confrontational homicide stems from the combination of anger, power, and fear. The
anger typically ignites the physical altercation and the struggle for power is the goal
while fear of loss is the primary motivator as well.
