The existence of a wide range of individual differences. Theories organize, explain, and guide questions and predictions. Be sure to recognize examples of reasoning from each side of each issue. Be able to categorize major theories by where they stand on each issue. [psychoanalytic (freud): only in childhood vs. psychosocial (erikson): throughout life: know the major assumptions and positions of the psychoanalytic approach. 8 stages: overlaps with freud, three extra stages. > next stage occurs once you"ve reached a conclusion. > best resolution has a balance- mostly positive with a sprinkling of negative. Universal: doesn"t matter what culture you grow up in, all experience the stages. Culture specific: your experience is facilitated differently by different cultures. Erickson built on freud"s theories but with a more optimistic view on when development can happen. Erikson was a lifespan theorist (development all throughout life) Kept freud"s theory of nature: know the major assumptions of behaviorism.
