Just war/militarism/pacifism: militarism = war is good, should be used as answer for everything, pacifism = war is bad, keep peace, negotiate, diplomacy, just war = war is appropriate given certain conditions. Jus ad bellum (right reasons for war) Just cause protecting innocent, restoring something from innocent, punishing guilty. Just intent must have peace as ultimate goal. Damage must be in proportion to good achieved. Jus in bello (right conduct in war) Can only harm those who can harm us. Development of state system : after 30 yrs war, treaty of westphalia, only princes and kings could wage war (large actors), holy roman empire. Mad/second strike mutually assured destruction, if i hit you and you don"t die, you can hit me back, worse for both of us. Nation-state a state in which the boundaries are same as the ethnic group.
