Two types: cellular respiration, glucose + o2 co2 + energy, organismic respiration. Iii: o2 body and it"s cells, body and cells give off co2. Ideal respiratory medium is air, not water: this is because there is more oxygen in the air and it takes less energy to ventilate, ventilation-mechanism for moving the respiratory medium over the respiratory surface. Ideal respiratory surface: lots of surface area-increases opportunity for gas exchange, thin walls-allow for easy diffusion, moist-o2 and co2 must be dissolved in order to diffuse across the respiratory surface. Iv: should be lots of blood vessels. 4 major respiratory surfaces: body surface, mollusks, annelids, some amphibians, animals should be small because small animals tend to have a large surface to volume ration. If animal is terrestrial, it must live in a moist environment and/or secrete mucus: tracheal tubes, insects, some other arthropods, these systems have spiracles = openings in the body surface.
