PT 548L Study Guide - Quiz Guide: Physical Therapy, Spasm, Granulation Tissue
Document Summary
Physical agents: physical energies such as thermal, mechanical, and electromagnetic. In order to select intervention, need to understand : nature of pathology, where patient is on the timeline of inflammatory process. Inflammation: result of damage to body tissues and can be caused by a number of factors including : conditions affected by age (osteoarthritis) trauma (sprain, strain) repetitive use. 3 stages of inflammation: acute inflammatory stage, proliferative stage, remodeling (maturation) stage. Immediate and early response to an injurious agent: acute inflammatory stage, relatively short duration minutes, hours, or few days (up to day 5-10, vascular (cellular) response, edema formation. Clinical presentation: high irritability acute pain/pain at rest/pain with motion, heat/redness/swelling, loss of rom, muscle spasms, muscle inhibition. General goals of therapeutic interventions: maximal protection phase of rehab, manage inflammatory response decrease pain/effusion, protect injured tissue and support healing, prevent adverse effects of immobility, patient education on their role for success.
