It is the size of your fist but it weighs only about 300g. It beats about 100,000 times a day and you can have about in a lifetime have 3 billion beats. It pumps about 14000 liters of blood per day, and we have about 5 liters of blood. The main job of the heart is to deliver the nutrients. So it needs the blood vessels because it needs the pathway through which it is going to deliver. Ultimately when people die it is because the heart stops beating. The reason the heart is able to act as a pump is due to its unique characteristics. The deoxygenated blood flows into the right atrium then to the right ventricle.
