Social stratification is about making sense, or at least trying to explain and understand, the various hierarchies that exist within societies (levine, p. 1) Study of unequal distribution of societal resources. Marx provides no systematic analysis of the concept of class (3) Instead he explains class in terms of individuals to structure of ownership and paid labor. Fundamental classes: capitalists: owners of the means of production, workers: nonpropertied wage-labor. Own no commodity, only their labor power: petty bourgeois: outside of capitalist social relations of production. This relationship was based on exploitation of the workers by the capitalists. Equation of capitalism = (profit max = cost min) Capitalism is contradictory because the success of the capitalists depends on the exploitation of the working class. Classes are stratified by production process and how the goods are acquired. Socioeconomic status: skills, education, inherited wealth. Weber does not deny the importance of class conflict.
