Rise of the samurai, internal problems, and relations worsen. Hogen rebellion (1156-1159) struggle b/w emperor go shirakawa and retired emperor. Fujiwara try to influence go shirakawa and he ends up enlisting aid of the taira and minamoto and defeats the fujiwara. Fujiwara get aid of minamoto no yoshitomo, organize a coup in 1159 and imprison go. Shirakawa: event is known as the heiji rebellion. Taira no kiyomori rescues go shirakawa and kills minamoto no yoshimoto. Taira clan manages affairs in kyoto with go shirakawa for 20 years. Written about 1220, illustrations created some time in second half of 13 th c. Most famous scene is the burning of sanjo palace o: troops led by fujiwara no nobuyori attack go shirakawa"s palace and set fire to it. Taira clan still managing affairs in kyoto, but go shirakawa plays the taira and minamoto against each other for 5 years: call the gempei wars (1180-1185)
