One might think that policy changes by the local government of a small coastal city in. California would have little to no effect on the state of security and privacy beyond its borders. Yet, a new initiative by the police department of carlsbad, california promises to bring a new era of smart policing to the country. The proposal passed through the city council and received mixed reactions from the public. American civil liberties union (aclu) in san diego is especially concerned. They claim that by having all this data, the government could theoretically track anywhere a person goes, in real time. The aclu also feels there is no need for the record of innocent drivers [to be] stored for an endless amount of time. (diehl) These are the exact concerns that we discussed in class and for the aclu to bring them up shows how poignant they are.
