Psych 422 human sexuality: hormones are signaling molecules secreted into the blood by endocrine glands, many hormones are active in sexual and reproductive physiology, sex steroids: Fall into 3 major subgroups: androgens >>> testosterone; 5 (alpha-dihydrotestosterone) (dht, mainly high in men, estrogens >>> estradiol, mainly high in women, progestin"s >>>> progesterone, mainly high in women, synthesis of the main sex steroids. Aromatase synthesizes estradiol from testosterone: not the only source of how estradiol is synthesized in women. In men: 2 cycles: short cycle: 2-4 hours, circadian (24-hour cycle) cycle: peaks in the morning. In women: peaks at ovulation in menstruation cycle, this hormone is often associated with aggression, libido, helps distinguish gonads in fetal development. In primates: swollen and red behinds/bodies when in heat. Cells in brain also possess aromatase: production of estrogen, graph, progesterone, primarily a female hormone, present in blood at high levels, during luteal phase of menstrual cycle.
