Stories are passed down through oral tradition ning. Around 550 bc someone sat down and wrote the versions we read today. Also meant to be a kind of cultural/ethical education. Started at the wedding of peleus (hero) and thetis (goddess) They decided not to invite eris (goddess of strife) She gets a gold apple and leaves it on the table, causing issues. Fight between aphrodite, hera, and athena about who is the most beautiful and who the apple should go to. Zeus will not get involved and sends them to a paris shepherd who is actually a trojan prince.
