Two of the six fundamental canons say so: engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner and engineers shall avoid deceptive acts. Yet dishonest practices are relatively common in engineering. When one takes part in dishonest practices they are hoping to gain advancement, or get a pay raise in doing so. For example, when an engineer fudges a safety report, they are hoping that in doing so, it will impress their bosses and will help them receive some sort of benefit. Also, an engineer could be threatened his/her job if a product is not released in time.
