Test #4 Study Guide: East Asia and SE Asia
East Asia:
Physical Geography:
East Asia is similar in latitude (distance north of the equator) to North America
Also similar in size to the United States (East Asia is slightly larger)
The entire region is heavily populated with two exceptions: Desertous regions in the north
(Taklamakan and Gobi deserts) and highland region of Tibetan Plateau in west.
Chinese Dynasties – long periods of political rule under one family.
The main ethnic group of China are the Han, who view themselves as descendants of the Han Dynasty
(202BC-220AD).
Han make up 19% of the total world population.
Effects of the Han Dynasty? (There are five).
Importance of Yuan Dynasty? Of the Manchu Dynasty?
China Proper – Eastern half of China where majority of population lives. Dominant ethnicity is Han
Chinese. Why would China disagree with this distinction? What does it imply?
The Chinese Frontier – the autonomous regions of China (Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia) that are
traditionally outside of the Han Chinese ethnic core.
Tibet – ethnic Tibetans. Would like to be free from China once again. Role of the Dalai Lama?
Xinjiang – a Turkic region where most Uighurs are Sunni Muslim.
Inner Mongolia – a region populated by ethnic Mongols.
Population and Settlement in East Asia:
Most populated region in the entire world
Population density of East Asia is very high in the east and very low in the west.
The physical geography of East Asia causes this difference in population density. People can’t live in
the desertous regions or the highland regions. They live in the East—especially in the plains and
lowland river valleys.
Many people live near the coasts in East Asia.
High population densities found in every country of East Asia.
Very low TFRs and as a result, very low RNIs.
All countries of East Asia have very high percentages of urban populations (all countries of East Asia
would be called “urbanized”) with one major exception: China.
China is the only East Asian country with more than half of its population living in rural areas.
In a few decades, China will also have more than 50% of its population living in urban areas.
Culture in East Asia:
Linguistic geography of East Asia: most people speak a language that belongs to Sino-Tibetan
language family (Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean)
Animosity between Taiwan and China resulted from the Civil War that saw Mao’s communist take
control of mainland China. The losing side resides in Taiwan today.
Geopolitics in East Asia:
Conflict between Japan and neighbors since turn of 20th century caused by Japanese Imperialism
Two wars between Japanese and Chinese, at the same time as the Chinese Civil War
Chinese Civil war explains current dispute between China and Taiwan
