Test #3 Review Guide (note, this is not the definitive list of items to study for the test)
Introduction to Geography:
Physical vs Human Geography. What do each focus on?
Types of Regions – vernacular, formal. How are they defined? How do they exhibit core-periphery behavior?
World regions are example of what type?
Four principles that define a world region?
What is the principle of human environment interaction?
Terms and Concepts
Globalization – What motivates it? What enables it? Global culture - elements?
Folk culture
Physical Geography:
Earth-Sun Geometry
What is the difference between weather and climate?
What are the two major ingredients of climate?
Important lines of latitude created by earth/sun geometry – Equator, Tropic lines, Arctic and Antarctic circles.
What does the sub-solar point represent? Where does it move?
Where is high and low pressure located? What type of weather is associated with each?
Global circulation systems causes a few things. One is predominant wind directions. The other is the pressure system
bands.
How is climate defined? What is the difference between climate and weather?
Climate classification system identifies 6 types of climates. Who created it?
Climate leads to the creation of 12 major biome types.
North Africa/Southwest Asia
Cultural hearth – N Africa/SW Asia is a cultural hearth in many ways – agriculture (domestication), urbanization,
religion (monotheism)
Regional Terms – Near East, Far East, East, and Middle East. Misnomers: Arab World, Muslim World.
Maghreb and Levant.
Physical Boundaries – Oceans in West, Desert to the South, Seas to the North, Mountains to the West.
Climate – Dry climates (desert, semi-desert) most predominant in region. Second most is Mediterranean climate
(important for agriculture in the region – dry farming).
Relationship between water and settlement – settlement pattern caused by access to water (rivers, oases,
oceans/seas).
Relationship between water and climate – much of the region too extreme to support settlement (Sahara
Desert)
Aridity – the phenomenon of experiencing very little precipitation in a certain place. It hinders the growth of
plant and animal life. Drought avoidance and drought endurance are coping strategies. What are exotic rivers?
Fertile Crescent – crescent shaped area in which most people of the region live (north part of Arabian Peninsula)
made fertile by the presence of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. The Cradle of Civilization. Where domestication
first occurred.
Regional demographics – high/low population extremes from country to country. Low population densities,
urbanized populations, naturally growing populations with positive TFRs and RNIs. Introduction of family
planning is slowing growth. 2x size of United States in landmass and 500 million population.
