On back of diaphragm is a roll of copper wire. Diaphragm moves, magnetic field disturbed, copper wire reads and takes energy. Does not pick up quiet sounds, not so sensitive. Very unidirectional really good pickup from front, not from back or sides. Has a capacitor (i. e. condenser), which stores charge. 2 plates one is stationary and one moves/distance between plates change. Since it doesn"t have to physically move as much, the plates pick up more specifics accurately. Good for acoustic guitar and vocals, picking up lots of detail: ribbon. Super sensitive, physically, but not as loud as other microphones. Bi directional rejects things from sides really well, but gets the front and back. Ribbon"s mass is so much lighter, which makes it move a lot more sensitive and gives it a darker, warmer sound. Loud instruments like guitar amps will make the ribbon bust and ruin the microphone. Can use for drums overhead, and as a room microphone for strings/orchestras.
