Disco culture - originated in gay nyc nightclubs/lofts. Disco jouissance - pleasure, delight, and ecstasy. An emotional palette that reflects timbres and sounds from different musical influences i. e. latin music, percussion, saxes, trumpets, etc. String and harp sounds from european orchestral music, but molded by tango and cabaret. Minor mode trope expresses sentimentality that the author claims is both tragic and celebratory but ultimately triumphant and transcendence. The recitative-like singing in some sections and less than full voice sets it apart. Sufi sect - mystical islamic sect, specifically are okay with music. Theory - unfavorable attitude towards music/not music if it has to do with religion. Practice - music plays important part in social life (weddings, festivals, etc) Even though qur"anic chanting sounds like music, it"s not because it"s being used for religion/function for religion. Azan - call to prayer, not music. Melody and vocal artistry do not involve music.
