Midterm study guide pt 2: if music is known by the west, that means its society has the capability to record and distribute its music. If you"ve never heard music from that country, or if there"s no recorded music, it means its poor and does not have access to recent technology. Powers of hearing - clairaudience - how well you can hear, frequencies, listening really in depth: positive uses of sound - acoustic design (making machines go shhh) Negative uses of sound - mechanical noise ( machines go argggghh: dancehall culture and social identification for jamaican lower class youth, used it as a promotional of music - vehicle. Big amps: open to the skies, for god. religion, promoted dancehall culture. Call & response (djs vs pastors) repetition/loudness of drums/brings on spiritual possession/ trance : pleasure - sufferation - embodiment of sound, pure sensation: Sufferation -> feeling pain to the point of pleasure.
