The best way to prepare for this exam is to understand the key assumptions of each theory. For instance, control theories miss out on learning, both learning and control theories do not take into consideration the role of strain; strain theories do not seem to care about prior experiences. You will not be tested on this but understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each theory can be very helpful: policy implications of each theory are important. Think (and consult lecture notes) about the suggestions each school of thought would make to policymakers: there may be a question or two related to the assigned readings (see bb). In addition, you will be expected to operate some of the basic facts/ideas shared by the authors of the readings in your short answer entries. Please pay particular attention to the following readings: laub and sampson, tyler, schroeder and frana, and yar.
