Crime is both a popular and controversial subject: contentious political issue, frequent topic of news coverage, frequent focus on tv/music/movies etc. How is crime portrayed in popular entertainment, in the news media, and in political discourse: both historically and contemporarily. Old approach : prejudice as a set of feelings held by an individual. New approach : new in 1958, but still important today, because the old approach still lives on, prejudice as a sense of group position. The groups that are at the center of prejudice need to mean something in order for it to exist. White exists only because it is different than black: without a difference , it is meaningless.
