Document Summary

Digestion: define the terms digestion and absorption. Digestion: the chemical breakup of complex food molecules into smaller molecules that can be absorbed. Absorption: the process of bringing those smaller molecules inside the body: identify which organs are part of the gi tract itself and which are related to its function. Part of the gi tract: esophagus, stomach, colon, small intestine. Related to its function: liver, gallbladder, pancreas, rectum: describe the roles that longitudinal, circular, and sphincter muscles play in digestion, absorption, and excretion. Longitudinal and circular muscles work together to push the food forward. Waves of longitudinal muscles propel the food forward; the contraction of circular muscles behind the food material prevents it from going backwards. Sphincter muscles are a type of circular muscle found in between each organ. The sphincter between the esophagus and stomach prevents backflow of food into the esophagus (called heartburn).
