At the atomic molecular level energy levels are quantized, including electronic, vibrational and rotational states. Absorption (or emission) of quanta of electromagnetic radiation can cause changes in these states. Analyzing this data can provide information about chemical structures. The ways that molecules interact can be predicated by considering the electrostatic interactions between molecules. These interactions cause changes in the potential energy of the system. In general, the structures with the lowest potential energy will predominate, but the kinetic energy available from collisions will also affect the energy of the system. The molecular level structure of a substance can be used to predict properties. This includes both how the electron density is distributed in the molecule, and the three-dimensional structure of the molecule. The three-dimensional structure of carbon compounds depends on the interactions (attractive and repulsive) between parts of the molecule (and the surrounding solvent), and the types of bonds, and the arrangements of atoms in the molecule.
