Diversity refers to all the ways in which people are different.
The term has recently grown in use.
Diversity is not a legal concept, not does it include some people.
A major focus of diversity is our ability to understand and adapt to differences.
It is not, however, about feeling good about ourselves. It’s about raising awareness,
understand, and valuing differences. Allowing us to leverage diversity.
Affirmative Action focuses on increasing the number of diverse employees hired.
However, diversity aims at changing organizations culture to be more accepting.
Affirmative action is mandatory, but diversity is voluntary.
Diversity and Inclusion
Inclusion is a process of promoting sense of belonging and valuing unique talents.
In an inclusive environment, no one should sacrifice individuality to be accepted.
Why is diversity important?
Provides lesson that it is ok to be open about differences regarding race, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, language, and many more.
In the workplace, it creates team, fosters productivity, and boosts profits and creativity.
Allows us to become okay with different cultures.

Culture and Its Influence
Culture refers to way of life, including everything that is learned, shared, and transmitted
from one generation to the next.
Manifestations of Culture
Life is extensively affected by culture, which determines out values, beliefs, and rules.
Culture also manifests in nonverbal communication.
Characteristics of Culture
Earliest culture is from parents and people around you.
Culture shapes nature: different cultures mold human nature in different directions;
perceptions and categories mediate biology and nature; culture is integrated and not a
random collection of customs and beliefs.
Three levels of culture
International- traditions extending beyond national boundaries, spread by migration,
colonization, and expansion.
National- experiences, beliefs, customs, and values shared by people in same nation.
Subculture- personal beliefs and things that make us different.
Cultural Landscape
Different lifestyles, traditions, and perspectives that can be found in any society.
Changing in many ways.
The cultural landscape that surrounds us is both fluid and complex.
Ways in which cultural landscape is changing
Among 7000 languages spoken in world, one becomes extinct each 2 weeks.
Work/life policies, including paid and unpaid time off, flextime, and telecommuting.
Changes in surnames in America.
Generational issues. There are subcultural and demographic differences within each
generation.
How is current demographic landscape different?
No longer rural, more than 80% in urban areas.
African Americans less than 13% in latest census.
Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics are fastest growing population in United States.
Hispanics have accounted for more than half of total population growth.
Pivoting from Caucasians-African Americans to multiracial and multicultural.
What does recent census predict?
America is fifth largest Spanish speaker in the world.
