Chapter 4: student diversity- culture, language, and gender. Culture and language are the two most important dimensions of diversity. Culture- the knowledge, attitudes, values, customs, and behavior patterns that characterize a social group. Cultural diversity- refers to the different cultures you will encounter in a classroom and how they influence learning. Some cultures of students homes compliment school learning and others do not: language is an example of this. Peer values either support school learning or they make students form resistant cultures- this is a symptom of low grades, no motivation, truancy, or high dropout rates. Social commentators have used different metaphors to describe the relationships among the diverse cultures in the united states, and one used is melting pot . Assimilation- a process of socializing people so that they adopt dominant social norms and patterns of behavior: immigrants, eager to become american and share in the countries economic wealth generally accept assimilation efforts.
