When americans put them there, they realized after the fact that there was gold. Natives (cherokees) refused to move because they were tired of moving, so americans forced them to move & 15,000 natives died. Process and system of human bondage inherently violent. It was an economic incentive not to harm or kill slaves, though. Slaves were property, therefore no one wanted to destroy their property. Lynching period was fear that whites would lose their power. There was competition and with competition brings violence.
