Document Summary

Deviance: violation of a social norm that illicit a negative reactions . Sanctions: can be positive/negative & formal/informal, used to issue consequences (punishment or rewards) Looked at autopsies of criminals to see if they were different than non-criminals they did. Based on interviews with members: both theories need to work together to create one big picture & explanation. Problem: everyone has access to these success goals, not everyone has the means to achieve them. Means are blocked to some groups, others have more access to these means than others. For example, lower class poverty becomes the norm within the group. No longer a question of what"s wrong with the individual, but what"s wrong with the system: deviance: when the system of norms is broken down, deviance becomes a viable option, modes of adaptation. Societal dropouts: they exist among us, but not a part of society i. e. vagabonds, hobos.
