Historically: by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, two major categories developed, heterosexual, homosexual, not natural categories- they are socially constructed- modern creations. Questioning sexual identities: identities are always shifting, unstable and arbitrary, queer theory- represents the view that sexual life is artificially organized into categories that reflect the power of heterosexual norms, we do sexuality like we do gender . You have a union with them but they don"t live with you. Or you are married to a person and you live in different cities: choice people who prefer their independence. They want to be with each other but they love their space: these types of relationships are more common among younger people than older people. Blurred boundaries: boundaries of the category families are becoming fluid and blurred, many move across boundaries at various points in their lives.
