Document Summary

Triad: an interaction between two people, when you add a third person. Now your focus is not just on one other person. Now you have to change your show a little bit because it is being put on in front of two people. Sometimes you have shifting terms when one person will interact with just one of the people in the triad for a time being. Anytime you add more people it changes the interaction. 3 groups: primary groups: describes people that are the closest to us. Usually made up of a small number of people. Usually characterized by a certain amount of intimacy. Do a lot of activities together: long-lasting relationships, fulfill our expressive needs, secondary groups: they are made up of casual acquaintances. You have brief, specific interactions such as going to class together: fulfill our instrumental needs, reference groups: use as a standard of evaluation. We can compare ourselves to these other groups.
