Simmel: dyad-group of two, most intimate form of social life, mutually dependent. If one member leaves the group ends: triad-group of three or more. When a 3rd person joins: possible roles, mediator-the conflict resolver, tertius gaudens-one who profits from disagreement with others, divide et impera-one who purposefully breaks up the others. Simmel"s approach: small, single focus, informal, equality, f2f (face to face, party, same as a small group, but multifocal, large, formal, status, differentiation. Cooley: primary, intimate, face to face, strong influence, secondary, impersonal, exists as means to end, other ways, in group/out group, useful in describing groups with power inequality, reference group, a group useful for comparison, the state fair . Social network: a set of ties between individuals, narrative-sum of stories within a series of ties tie-set of stories explaining our relationship to each network member. Embeddedness refers to the degree to which ties are reinforced through indirect paths.
