Status: socially defined position that a person occupies. Ascribed status: obtained at birth (age, sex, race). Achieved status: chosen or attained (student, parent, teacher). Status set: combination of all statuses a person holds. (student, female, us citizen)(guides what you do & enables others to predict your behavior). Master status: takes primary over other statuses. society dictates what status becomes master status (child of famous person vs. child of ex-con or homosexual). Role: social expectations or behaviors associated w/ a particular status. (occupy status vs. play a role). Role sets: multiple roles attached to single status. Prescribed role: what society suggests we should do (student= going to class, studying) vs. role perception: what society actually does (student= not go to class, not take notes). Differ b/c 1. not deeply committed to role, enough flexibility exists that some roles can be fulfilled w/o performance, other roles associated w/ other statuses (bf, employee, athlete) competes for student"s time.
