Caste: birth determines status, ascribed status, practice endogamy, marriage within own group, ritual pollution rules limit contact between castes, untouchables contaminate members of a higher caste, caste system formally abolished in 1949. *video system of women: but remains a part od everyday life. Us racial caste system: replaced slavery, al whites had higher status than all blacks, separate schools, hotels, toilets, etc.
