Statuses/roles (also norms: ascribed- given (gender, race, age, achieved- attained yourself, group of one"s statuses- status set, master status- most important/obvious/etc. (can be neutral positive or negative) Primary vs secondary groups: primary- usually small, intimate, and permanent, secondary- larger, not as permanent, organized for a particular task, someone can go from secondary to primary. In vs out groups: dangerous concept, can be labeled incorrectly, political ploy (i am an american [just like you!], there can be positive aspects too. Peer groups and peer pressure: trying to conform to others, social conformity (ex. The people in the elevator: reference groups, group you try to follow everyone has it so why can"t i, relative deprivation- comparing yourself against reference group and you"re lacking something. Social conformity: need to fit in with everyone (2 lines) Instrumental- not elected; more task-oriented: expressive- animated, funny, steers the group emotionally.
